Description:
Sentenced is a brief journey inside the
dark and closed world of a U.S. womens prison, narrated by
inmate Connie Hanes who later committed suicide by hanging in her
cell. As guards chain down a woman, she describes the years of inhuman
treatment and the abuse she has suffered. The film was sponsored
by Amnesty International USA in connection with its first project
on torture in the U.S., protesting the chaining of women prisoners.
Biography:
Carol Jacobsen is an award-winning social documentarian
whose works in video and photography address issues of womens
criminalization and censorship. Her work has been exhibited and
screened worldwide. She has received awards from the National Endowment
for the Arts, The Paul Robeson Foundation, Center for New Television,
Women in Film Foundation, Art Matters, Rockefeller Foundation, and
many others. She is associate professor of video at The School of
Art, University of Michigan. She serves as coordinator of the Michigan
Womens Clemency Project, seeking freedom for women wrongly
imprisoned, and her works are sponsored by and raise funds for Amnesty
International, Human Rights Watch, and other human and civil rights
organizations.
