Director: Meghna Gupta
Producer: Meghna Gupta, Gigi Berardi

Description:

Unravel follows the Western worlds least-wanted clothes, on a journey across Northern India, from sea to industrial interior. They get sent to Panipat, a sleepy town and the only place in the world that wants them, recycling them back into yarn.  Reshma is a bright, inquisitive woman working in a textile-recycling factory in small-time India, who dreams of traveling the vast distances that the clothes she handles have. While Reshma shows us how these garments get transformed, she and other women workers reflect on these clothes. Despite limited exposure to western culture, they construct a picture of how the West is, using both their imagination and the rumors that travel with the cast-off clothes.

Biography:

Meghna Gupta is currently a director/producer at Soul Rebel Films, a documentary and social issue film production company. She has recently completed a documentary about the journey of discarded western clothes commissioned by UCL for a major research project, The Waste of The World, in addition to supporting other films and media for Soul Rebel Films. The UCL commission spans material shot over 800 miles in North India, and lively exchange with some of the poorest individuals in the country, locked into the waste industry. Her educational background combines a BA degree in film and video, and a research master’s degree in anthropology. After receiving her master’s degree, she worked for the Documentary Filmmakers’ Group. There she was in charge of their social media strategy, editorial, interviews, features and other content across the spectrum of documentary. Her work in training continues as a mentor for a London-based project called MyStreet, which aims to teach high school children how to make short documentaries and engage with their communities. She has also had previous community filmmaking experience working as a teaching assistant for a Documentary Filmmaker’s Group led project–What’s Your Story. Here, disadvantaged groups of people involving refugees, the elderly and full-time caregivers were taught how to make documentaries over a three-month period.
