Description:
Bangladesh’s socio-cultural environment is built on gender discrimination, and girls are often considered to be financial burdens on their families from the time of birth. Empowering women is still a dream from generation to generation. This is the story of Ms. Rahela Begum, a single mother working as a female rickshaw-puller, who breaks traditional gender roles to support her two children after her husband leaves her. Muslim-majority Bangladesh is one of Asia’s most conservative societies, where the concept of a woman doing such a job was unheard of before Rahela hit the road three years ago in the capital city of Dhaka. Ignoring senseless conventions and stereotypes, Ms. Rahela is surely giving everyone in the sub-continent women-empowerment goals. From her start as a hapless single mother, her journey has been both challenging and inspiring, and her actions have proved that nothing is a barrier if you believe in yourself.
