Description:
This film by award-winning director Dawn Porter shares the story of Amy Sherald’s portrait of Breonna Taylor that’s helping a community shattered by the young woman’s death at the hands of the police. Bree Wayy looks at how the art world responded to the death of Breonna Taylor by using art not only as a form of protest, but as a space to heal.
Biographies:
Dawn Porter is an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work has appeared on HBO, PBS, Discovery, and Netflix. She is currently directing and executive producing an Apple TV multi-part documentary series with Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry, which focuses on both mental illness and mental well-being. Other projects include Vernon Jordan: Make It Plain, John Lewis: Good Trouble, and The Way I See It. Dawn also directed and produced the acclaimed four-hour Netflix original series, Bobby Kennedy for President. Her film, Trapped, which explored laws regulating abortion clinics in the south won the Special Jury Social Impact prize at the Sundance Film Festival, in addition to a Peabody Award. Her documentary, Gideon's Army, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and an Emmy and is part of the U.S. Department of State’s American Film Showcase. Dawn also directed and produced Rise: The Promise of My Brother’s Keeper, a film for The Discovery Channel chronicling President Obama’s program to help young men of color succeed. Dawn has been commissioned to create films for the Center for Investigative Reporting, Time and Essence Magazines, The New York Times Op Docs series, and Amazon.
Niema Jordan is a writer, director, and producer from Oakland, California. She began her career in media as an undergraduate at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she studied magazine writing and editing. She went on to be a health editor at Essence magazine and write for several print and digital publications. She is currently a story producer at Trilogy Films but has previously led social media strategy for entrepreneurs, produced a music festival, and serves on the board of directors for Camp Reel Stories. Niema received her Master of Public Health and Master of Journalism from University of California, Berkeley.
