When developers and city planners say they are "revitalizing" the historic black neighborhood of Overtown, in Miami Florida, they ignore its rich history and the community that has been living there for decades.
Biography:
Gina Margillo is an applied communication specialist with over 20 years leading high-profile programs to advance outcomes in social and environmental justice, racial and gender equity, SRHR, and public health, across post-conflict or geopolitically fragile countries. As a filmmaker and an activist, she uses art and media as tools to support social justice movements with partners such as UNDP, UNICEF, UNESCO and Planned Parenthood Global in Latin America. In the field of Education Entertainment, she has worked in Africa, Asia, and the Americas co-producing, writing and directing television, radio and web series, documentaries and concert series as tools for advocacy campaigns. She uses performance, conceptual art, video, and collage to tell stories, deconstruct issues, and build connections. She is a professor of storytelling for social change, and an ethnographic researcher.
