[watch trailer]
Directors/Producers: Jen Bradwell, Todd Boekelheide

Description:

The filmmakers are following a group of child care providers who are determined to change how our society values the education of its youngest citizens. With a mix of humor, outrage, and passion, film captures the unfolding stories of Patricia, a leader of the California child care workers union, as she fights on behalf of a largely immigrant workforce; Charlotte, another union member who tirelessly lifts up the low-income families in her care; and Anne, the director of a large preschool, who finds novel ways to value and support her teachers when jobs at Starbucks are offering higher pay. The film culminates as thousands of child care union members march on their state capitol demanding better working conditions, just as their contract is set to expire. Weaving together the magic they create in the classroom, the struggles they endure at home, and their tireless activism for their profession.

Biography:

Jen Bradwell has had a long career as a documentary film editor with over a dozen documentaries to her credit — most recently Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s Fair Play. Additional editing credits include the Emmy Award-winning Time for Ilhan, Sundance premiere Resilience and HBO’s Toxic Hot Seat. Jen has taught editing master classes at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and UC Santa Cruz’s Social Documentation program. Among the four films she cut for James Redford, two seminal projects on childhood trauma (Resilience and Paper Tigers) have had more than 50,000 community screenings and have helped spark a national conversation around what it means to be trauma-informed.

Todd Boekelheide started working in film at American Zoetrope, Francis Ford Coppola’s production company in San Francisco. Early in his career, he edited both picture and sound, then specialized as a re-recording mixer on numerous feature films, including The Right Stuff, Blue Velvet and Fight Club. His mixing work on Amadeus brought him an Oscar. He began composing for films in 1983 and since has scored over a hundred documentaries and fiction films. His score for Kids of Survival earned him an Emmy. Other recent credits include 3½ Minutes, Ten Bullets for Marc Silver, Paper Tigers for James Redford, Adios Amor for Laurie Coyle, and Who Will Write Our History for Roberta Grossman. Todd is a member of both the film and television Academies.
