Young and Restless in China

YOUNG AND RESTLESS IN CHINA
(106 minutes) China/USA
Director/Producer/Writer: Sue Williams
Producer: Kathryn Dietz
Executive Producer: Judith Vecchione

Description:
Young and Restless in China is a groundbreaking documentary that follows the lives of nine young people over four years, as they struggle to find their way in a country changing as fast as any in history. Raised under communism, they are now making their way in China's blazing capitalist economy. The film tracks five wildly ambitious graduates-a media savvy hip-hop artist, two migrant workers living precariously on society's edge, a dedicated medical resident, and a courageous environmental activist. What happens along the way is surprising. Some find themselves torn between traditional culture and tantalizing new opportunities, while others begin the heady ride to wealth and power. A few find love and resolve family conflicts. Others seem likely to crash and burn along the way. The film is buoyed by a Chinese rock and hip-hop soundtrack while featuring scenes of Chinese life rarely seen in the West.

Biography:
Sue Williams and Kathryn Dietz formed Ambrica Productions in 1986 to develop and produce documentaries of international scope and interest. Their first project was the epic China: A Century of Revolution, three two-hour films for PBS that explored the turbulent social and political history of 20th century China. Its critically acclaimed biography of Eleanor Roosevelt special aired as part of the PBS series American Experience in January 2000 and was one of its highest-rated programs ever. China in the Red is a two-hour special that explores the human cost of the economic reforms sweeping China today by following ten families over a four year period. It aired on the PBS series FRONTLINE in February 2003. Ambrica's documentary Time of Fear, about Japanese American internment in Arkansas during World War II, was broadcast on national PBS in May 2005. Ambrica also produced Mary Pickford for American Experience, a 90-minute portrait of the life and art of the world's first superstar, and one the most powerful women in Hollywood history. It was broadcast on PBS in 2005.
