Director: Veronica Lopez

Description:

A glimpse into the filmmaker’s nephew's life and his struggle with mental illness in the wake of repeated national tragedies.

Biography:

Veronica Lopez has been interested in documentary filmmaking for at least a decade. While working as a college neuroscience lecturer, she gained film and video experience by volunteering at local community access channels and taking film courses. She made Shoot the Freak (2010) while participating in a documentary production workshop at the New School in New York City.  This short documentary, about a now vanishing side of the Coney Island boardwalk, was screened at the Coney Island Film Festival in 2011. Veronica also interned at the Media Education Foundation in Massachusetts, an organization that produces and distributes documentaries about mass media. Inspired by stories of her once undocumented father, she has a special interest in the lives of immigrants and their children. Her other subject interests include those related to her gender identity and science background. Veronica holds a PhD in behavioral neuroscience from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a BA in psychology from the UC Berkeley.
