[watch trailer] |
Director: Nahid Persson Sarvestani
Description:
A student activist in Iran's 1979 revolution that overthrew the Shah, Nahid Persson Sarvestani fled to Sweden with her baby after Islamists seized power and began persecuting leftists who had been their revolutionary allies. Three decades later, prompted by brutal crackdowns on protests in Iran and long-suppressed guilt for abandoning a younger brother to imprisonment and death, the filmmaker locates and reunites with five women who were tortured in the jails she so narrowly escaped. Through their stories, she gains understanding of the horrible experiences these women share with her friends and family.
Biography:
Born in Iran, Nahid Persson Sarvestani took political asylum in Sweden as a result of her political activism during and after the 1979 revolution in Iran. Nahid’s social-political films have been harshly critical of the position of women under the Islamic Republic regime. In 2006 Nahid was arrested in Iran for her critical depiction of women under the Islamic Republic regime. The release of her upcoming film My Stolen Revolution reveals a yet not told story about imprisonment and torture in Iran. Nahid is the recipient of numerous awards including the Golden Dragon at the Krakow Film Festival, Best International News Documentary at the TV-festival in Monte Carlo, as well as The Crystal Award (Kristallen) by SVT (Swedish State Television) and an International Emmy nomination for Prostitution Behind the Veil. Nahid Persson has on several occasions portrayed her former home country Iran in films that have gained international reputation, such as The Queen and I and Prostitution Behind the Veil.
