The Pad Piper
(52 min) India/Japan
[watch trailer]

Saturday 10/18, 3:00 PM (Session 6)

Director/Producer: Akanksha Sood

Description:

The Pad Piper is the incredible story of a school dropout and grassroots innovator from India, Arunachalam Muruganantham, and how his innovation, a low-cost sanitary-pad making machine, is changing the face of menstrual hygiene for women across India. It may not sound path breaking, but this machine is changing lives of women across the world and giving them dignity. Menstruation is a taboo and a subject few men know or dare to ask about. Muruganantham's curiosity about his wife's use of cloth during her periods led to shocking revelations, and a long body of research that lasted over eight years. He even went to the extent of wearing a sanitary pad himself!

Biography

Starting out over a decade ago, Akanksha is at the forefront of international natural history and science documentary programming in India. With a debut in research and production, she has gone from strength to strength, transforming small media houses into powerful multidimensional production companies and opening doors for Indian filmmakers to direct commissions from international broadcasters in the natural history genre. Her multitasking skills in research, production, business development and eye for a story have enabled her to bring to life big-ticket productions – from feature films to award-winning documentaries. Akanksha is the winner of the 61st National Film Award given by the President of India for the directorial debut The Pad Piper.
