TO THE STREET (A LA
CALLE) (111 min) Venezuela |
Directors: Nelson G. Navarrete, Maxx Caicedo
Producers: Nelson G.
Navarrete, Maxx Caicedo, Shawna Brakefield-Haase, Marcus Cheek
Executive Producer: Greg Little
Description:
Film captures the
remarkable courage of the Venezuelan people as they unite to restore
liberty to their country from the key opposition figures including
Leopoldo López — whose arrest and imprisonment inspired a national
movement to grassroots activist Nixon Leal. As acting interim
President Juan Guaidó works to rally international opposition to the
Maduro regime, the corrupt dictator and
his allies tighten their hold over a nation already crippled by
hyperinflation, blocking life-saving humanitarian aid and repressing
dissent with politically motivated arrests, torture and killings.
Biography:
Nelson G. Navarret was raised in Caracas, Venezuela until the age of 15, when his family fled the country in the face of mounting political upheaval. He received a degree in cinema at San Francisco State University, before returning to Venezuela, where he worked with some of the most influential Latin hip hop artists. A co-founder of Vitamin Productions, A La Calle is his first feature documentary. Given the political nature of the film, Nelson is currently unable to return to his family in Venezuela.
Maxx Caicedo is a second-generation Colombian-American filmmaker and a graduate of Tufts University. He served in the Peace Corps as a teacher of English and Biology in Mozambique and went on to work as a political consultant with Lake Research Partners, representing numerous members of Congress. Maxx came late to filmmaking when he founded Vitamin Productions with co-director Nelson G. Navarrete and producer Marcus Cheek. Their clients include Samsung, Skype and Universal. A La Calle is Caicedo’s first feature documentary.
Marcus Cheek is acting creative director and CEO at Vitamin Productions. Marcus’s proud Mexican and African-American heritage greatly influences his goal to position Vitamin as a production company that is well-suited to tell the stories of people of color and represent the complexities of their experience. Marcus studied at Tufts University where he earned his B.A. in international relations and economics. He went on to manage digital campaigns for Disney and Visa as an advertising account executive before founding Vitamin Productions with co-directors Nelson G. Navarrete and Maxx Caicedo.
