Representative Barbara
Lee is a steadfast voice for human rights, peace and economic and
racial justice in the US Congress who cut her teeth as a volunteer
for the Black Panther Party and was the lone vote in opposition to
the broad authorization of military force following the September
11th attacks. The film not only introduces the public to Barbara Lee
but to many others such as Senator Cory Booker, Rep. John Lewis, Rep.
Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, CNN commentator Van
Jones, actor Danny Glover and author Alice Walker who all share
insights about what makes Barbara Lee unique as a public servant and
as a truth-telling African American woman.
Biography:
Abby Ginzberg is
a Peabody-Award
winning filmmaker who has been producing documentaries about race and
social justice for over 30 years. Her film Waging
Change presents
the challenges faced by tipped servers, forced to rely on tips and
the federal tipped minimum wage of $2.13, And Then They Came For Us,
about the connection between the incarceration of Japanese Americans
during WW II and the Muslim travel ban. Soft Vengeance: Albie
Sachs and the New South Africa won a Peabody award. She was the Consulting Producer on The
Barber of Birmingham nominated
for an Oscar.
Shola Lynch is an award-winning filmmaker best known for the documentary Free
Angela &
All Political Prisoners and the Peabody Award winning documentary Chisholm ‘72: Unbought & Unbossed.
Her film Free
Angela &
All Political Prisoners is a first hand account of the events that thrust Angela Davis into
the national spotlight from a young college professor to a fugitive
on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list. The film won the 2014 NAACP
Image Award for Excellence for Best Documentary.
Joslyn Rose
Lyons worked
on documentaries and TV shows for HBO, Warner Bros. Pictures, MTV,
BET, VH1, Discovery, PBS, MSNBC, Warner Bros., and Oprah Winfrey
Network. Her directorial debut Soundz
of Spirit premiered at HBO. Joslyn directed HBO Def Poetry with Simmons Lathan
Media Group, and produced the Grammy Showcase at Creative Artists
Agency. Joslyn co-founded a digital content platform with RESPECT
Magazine, working with The Grammy Museum, Capitol Records, and Yahoo!
Music.
